An investigation into al- legations of a historical sexual assault against a child has led to charges against a Whitby man, po- lice said. The Special Victims Unit began an investiga- tion in July of 2021 after re- ceiving information that a 13-year-old boy had been sexually assaulted be- tween 2005 and 2009, Dur- ham police said. An investi- gation continues and po- lice want to ensure there are no other victims. On Jan. 20 police an- nounced they've charged Samuel (Noel) Winders, 74, with offences including sex- ual assault, sexual exploita- tion, sexual interference and possessing and publish- ing child pornography. Anyone with informa- tion is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, extension 5337 or Crime Stoppers at 1- 800-222-8477. POLICE CONFRONT WOMAN WITH 'LARGE SWORD' IN OSHAWA Police used a conducted energy weapon to subdue a woman who was damaging parked vehicles while armed with a large sword in Oshawa. The woman was assessed at hospital and medically cleared after the incident, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16 in the area of Centre and John streets, Durham police said. Officers responding to a re- port of a person vandalizing vehicles encountered a woman who refused their demands that she drop the large sword she was armed with, police said. The confrontation esca- lated when the woman con- fronted officers, police said: "When the female turned toward the officers with the sword an officer deployed his (Taser)." POLICE INVESTIGATION INTO OSHAWA ARSON CONTINUES Police have released an image of two suspects as they continue their investi- gation into an act of arson that occurred in Oshawa in March of 2021.
