An investigation into al- legations of a historical sexual assault against a child has led to charges against a Whitby man, po- lice said. The Special Victims Unit began an investiga- tion in July of 2021 after re- ceiving information that a 13-year-old boy had been sexually assaulted be- tween 2005 and 2009, Dur- ham police said. An investi- gation continues and po- lice want to ensure there are no other victims. On Jan. 20 police an- nounced they've charged Samuel (Noel) Winders, 74, with offences including sex- ual assault, sexual exploita- tion, sexual interference and possessing and publish- ing child pornography. POLICE CONFRONT WOMAN WITH 'LARGE SWORD' IN OSHAWA Police used a conducted energy weapon to subdue a woman who was damaging parked vehicles while armed with a large sword in Oshawa. The woman was assessed at hospital and medically cleared after the incident, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16 in the area of Centre and John streets, Durham police said. Officers responding to a re- port of a person vandalizing vehicles encountered a woman who refused their demands that she drop the large sword she was armed with, police said. The confrontation esca- lated when the woman con- fronted officers, police said: "When the female turned toward the officers with the sword an officer deployed his (Taser)." A 39-year-old woman is charged with weapons pos- session and failure to com- ply with an undertaking. POLICE INVESTIGATION INTO OSHAWA ARSON CONTINUES Police have released an image of two suspects as they continue their investi- gation into an act of arson that occurred in Oshawa in March of 2021. The image depicts two people, both of whom are be- lieved to be male, who were in the vicinity of a residen- tial unit at 1520 Birchcliffe Avenue that was the scene of a fire on March 5, 2021, Durham police said. The two people left the unit prior to smoke from the fire be- coming visible, police said. An investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal found the cause of the fire to be arson.
