Project Tundra, an investigation by Toronto's Gun and Gang Task Force, began in October of 2020, police said. That investigation led to search warrants being executed in Whitby and Toronto and suspects were arrested in September of 2021, police said in a media release Jan. 18. Police seized a number of handguns, including semi-automatic weapons and a Glock pistol that had been converted to be fully automatic, ammunition and over-capacity magazines, police said. An estimated $4 million in drugs, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin were also seized, along with $93,000 in cash deemed to be proceeds of crime. Facing weapons and drug charges are Shaan Tareen, 33, of Whitby, and Rizwan Gharda, 31, of Toronto. Sire Castillo-Amparo, 27, of Toronto, is charged with drug offences. WHITBY MAN AMONG SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN $4M DRUG BUST JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@ durhamregion.com SHAAN TAREEN Toronto police photo NEWS The province's police watchdog has cleared a Durham police officer of criminal wrongdoing in connection with the death of a 48-year-old man in Clarington this past October. According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), on the morning of Oct. 2, 2021 police were looking for a man who had committed an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Belleville. The SIU says the man fled the scene and eventually crashed his vehicle into a ditch on Hwy. 115 between Concession Road 8 and Skelding Road in Clarington. The man got out of the vehicle and started fighting with the driver of another vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder of the highway. When police approached, the man fled across the highway and threatened to shoot the officers, the SIU says. A Durham police officer used a conducted energy weapon and the man fell on the road and was handcuffed by police. "The man became unresponsive during a search, so officers administered two doses of naloxone and assisted with resuscitative efforts. The man was taken to hospital via ambulance and died the following day," the SIU says. The SIU says the cause of the man's death remains unknown, but "there were no reasonable grounds to believe that it was attributable to unlawful conduct by the involved officers." The SIU is a provincial agency that investigates incidents of death, serious injury and allegations of sexual assault involving police officers. SIU CLEARS DURHAM COP IN DEATH OF MAN TASERED IN CLARINGTON The SIU says there are "no reasonable grounds" to believe a Durham police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the death of a 48-year-old man last October.
