The award-winning series will return in March and will feature two contestants from Durham Region among the 18 castaways that will be stranded on Fiji beaches where they'll endure a series of mental and physical challenges. Ajax resident Maryanne Oketch, 24, was among the competitors announced by CBS when the network unveiled details of the upcoming season in a Feb. 9 press release. According to the network, Oketch is a seminary student who still resides in her hometown of Ajax. Also representing Durham Region in the South Pacific will be Omar Zaheer, a 31-year-old veterinarian who hails from Kitchener but now resides in Whitby. Other Canadian content on the upcoming season of Survivor will be Drea Wheeler, a 35-year-old native of San Antonio, Texas who now resides in Montreal, Quebec working as a fitness consultant. "This season continues to define a bold new era of the series with the return of risky beware advantages, game-changing twists and a relentless pace that will push these castaways to their limits," said CBS in the release. "These determined players will be divided into three tribes of six and face a faster, more extreme season from the moment they step foot on the beach. The unpredictable situations will test even the strongest competitor, as food is scarce, rewards and supplies are minimal, and the mental and physical challenges force players to make impossible decisions and adjust their strategies, while still navigating the complex social game." The show, hosted by Jeff Probst, will return with a two-hour premiere on Wednesday, March 9, from 8 to 10 p.m., on CBS.
