13 | This Week | Thursday, March 10, 2022 durhamregion.com The old post office building in down- town Bowmanville will become a Long & McQuade music store. JUST THE FACTS The downtown Bowmanville post of- fice at 41 Temperance St. closed in 2019. Canada Post moved mail sorting from Bowmanville to a facility in Oshawa, and the remaining post office retail services moved to the small plaza at 136 King St. E. Recently, a company spokesperson con- firmed the old Bowmanville post office build- ing has been purchased by Long & McQuade and is currently under renovation. The project has hit some delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The owners now have a building permit, and the work is progressing. The Clarington Heritage Committee had a keen interest in preserving parts of the old post office building. The building is not heritage designated, and the new owners have no desire to have it designated. However, the owners did agree to preserve several feature-- keeping the mural on the wall, maintaining the mid-century modern stairwell (as much as possible) and keeping the "Bowmanville Post Office" lettering at the main entrance. Inside, the main floor of the new Long & McQuade will be largely renovated with a sales floor, an equipment rentals department and comprehensive music lesson offerings. The store is expected to be open in late fall 2022. NEWS WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? OLD POST OFFICE TO BE A MUSIC STORE Long and McQuade rendering WONDERING WHAT'S GOING ON SOMEWHERE IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
