Pick-up: April 14th &16th After two years and four days, the Region of Durham has lifted the state of emergency declared for the COVID-19 pandemic. "When I declared the state of emergency two years ago, no one truly knew the challenging journey ahead of us -- and as we know today, life hasn't been the same since," said Durham Regional chair John Henry in a statement. "There have been countless sacrifices made from all Durham residents -- front-line heroes, small businesses, volunteers, and so many others. Your dedication and collective efforts have had a direct and positive impact on getting us through this pandemic." The state of emergency was officially lifted on Monday, March 28, in consultation with the Durham Region medical officer of health, the chief administrative officer and the Regional Emergency Control Group and in partnership with all local municipalities. "Thank you to the Oshawa community and our local businesses for your part in getting us here today. We have all experienced the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the face of those uncertain times, our Council, residents, businesses and staff all rose to the challenge -- we have seen innovation in how we deliver services and created new ways to support Oshawa businesses and those in need. We overcame this as a community and now is the time to move forward and embrace the future together," said a release from Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. In Durham, the COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues. Last year, community and hospital vaccination clinics administered more than 1.2 million doses of the vaccine. "We stand together as a community to embrace a new normal and rebuild, supporting local businesses and those who have suffered economic loss. It's our time to emerge from the shadows of the past two years and forge a new path ahead. While the virus is still in our midst, we need to proceed responsibly and prudently as we look forward to a new beginning," said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster in a statement.
