Hostilities began on the ice and continued after a spectator interfered with a player away from the playing surface during the incident, which occurred Monday night, March 28, at Iroquois Park Sports Centre, according to Durham police. "There was a fight on the ice and as a player was leaving an adult pushed and shoved the player," police spokesman Chris Bovie said. In responding to an inquiry about the incident, Whitby Minor Hockey Association President Mark Elsenaar confirmed the game involved Whitby Under 16 players and a team from Kingston.from Kingston.f "I cannot comment further as there is an ongoing police investigation with regards to what happened outside of the complex," Elsenaar said by email. Video of the event posted online shows that the scuffle arose on the ice and continued in a parking lot outside. As events unfold, a man is pursued by a group of people and kicked as he falls to the ground. Video depicting events on the ice show players grappling as referees rush to break up fights. Fights among players continued after they were escorted off the ice, according to the images. Other video posted online shows Durham officers and cruisers with lights flashing on scene as a large crowds mills about. Durhamregion.com has chosen not to publish the video clips. Shawn Melo, 43, of Kingston has been charged with assault and causing a disturbance. Bovie said police continue to investigate the incident. Officers responded to the Home Depot store on Garden Street just before 9 p.m. Thursday, March 17, after two suspects attempted to buy more than $5,000 worth of merchandise with a credit card that did not belong to them, Durham police said. The suspects left the store after the transaction was declined, only to be met by the tactical support unit members and arrested, police said. Cops seized a stolen vehicle and a quantity of methamphetamine found on one of the suspects, police said. Alvin Mackey, 34, of Toronto and 36-year-old Cale Warnock of no fixed ad-Warnock of no fixed ad-W dress face charges of fraud and possession offraud and possession off property obtained by crime. Warnock is also charged with drug possession. CRIME TWO ARRESTED WITH STOLEN CAR AFTER ATTEMPTED FRAUD Two suspects havebeen arrested in Whitby on a number of fraud-related charges. In 2019, a retail corporation contacted the Durham Regional Police about several frauds at its stores that resulted in more than $200,000 in fraudulent returns, po-fraudulent returns, po-f lice said. Investigators with the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit were able to identify two suspects and, on March 22, executed a search warrant at home on Westport Drive in Whitby. Investigators reportedly seized $30,000 in property and $20,000 in gift cards belonging to the victim company, police noted. Shane Fullwood and Julianna Talevski, 29, of Whitby, face numerous fraud-related charges, in-fraud-related charges, in-f cluding fraud over $5,000, possession of the proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, money laundering and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. They were both released on undertakings. MAN CHARGED AS COPS SEIZE 'REALISTIC' BB GUN One man is charged after police responding to a disturbance at a Whitby hotel seized an imitation handgun. Officers responded to a hotel on Champlain Avenue for a report of a loud argument Sunday, March 20, and upon arriving learned a suspect had pulled a gun on another person, Durham police said. Officers arrested a person without incident and seized a "realistic- looking BB gun," police said. A 38-year-old man of no fixed address faces charges including weapons possession and breach of probation.
