ON NOW AT THE BRICK! Butter tart festivals are back and the season is kicking off with the Bowmanville Butter Tart Festival on April 23. The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the- Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, will have more than 35 vendors offering up butter tarts -- obviously -- as well as other treats like ice-cream, lemonade and famous cannoli from Holy Cannoli Toronto. Butter tart bakers from Durham Region and across Ontario will be on hand including Krumbs Breadery and Stuff based in Newcastle. "We will be bringing the classics -- plain, raisin, pecan, maple and maple pecan. But we will also be bringing fan favourites such as Nanaimo and rasp- berry and peanut buttecup," says Sherry-Lee Boyd who owns Krumbs with co-founder Geoff Coles. Butter tarts at Krumbs are made one dozen at a time with the pastry hand-rolled with a cold marble rolling pin. "We think a good butter tart is made with great butter, fresh eggs, local maple syrup (for the maple tarts), handmade pastry and loads of love," Boyd says. Event organizer Christine Nelson says it's important to have a mix of traditional and unique butter tarts, because everyone has their own ideas about butter tart style and flavours. "To aficionados, the smallest differences are a big deal," Nelson says. "Purists say true butter tarts should not contain raisins or nuts. Some like runny fillings, some firm. Some like thick pastry shells, while others like thin so the filling stars. Some prefer flaky pastry or even phyllo shells, while others don't want crumbs falling on their clothes." Other vendors scheduled to be at the Bowmanville festival include: Omni's Sweet Treats, Carla's Cookie Box, Grandma's Beach Treats, Doo Doo's Bakery, Mollyb's Gluten Free Kitchen and Tartistry. Admission is free, with non-perishable food donations being accepted to support the food bank at Simcoe Hall. If you miss the Bowmanville event, the Pickering Butter Tart Festival is planned for later this year -- date still to be announced -- and the third-annual Oshawa Butter Tart Festival is coming up Sept. 10.
