durhamregion.com This Week | Thursday, April 14, 2022 | 22 RICHENS, Janice September 8, 1947 - April 4, 2022 ------------------ It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Janice, after her courageous battle with cancer. Janice Kathleen Richens passed away peacefully April 4, 2022, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Janice was born in Toronto to John and Tressa Little on September 8, 1947. After growing up in Parkdale, she met her beloved Chris, and they then married in 1969. A few years later they welcomed their son Stephen into their lives. Janice devoted her life to her family and friends; always cooking, entertaining, and caring for everyone before herself. We will miss her more than words can say. Janice is survived by her husband Christopher, son Stephen (Nori), sister Sharlene (Michael), Brother In-Law Andrew (David), along with countless nieces, nephews, friends and very dear neighbours. Janice was predeceased by her twin sister Joanne, and older sisters Dolores and Lorraine. Friends and Family are invited to Celebrate Janice's life at Mount Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 21 Garrard Road, Whitby, ON, Sunday, May 15th, from 1pm - 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre as expressions of sympathy would be greatly appreciated by the family. DEVITT, Jean McKay (Smart) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Passed away on Monday April 4, 2022 in her 102nd year. She is predeceased by her husband Carl, her parents John (Jack) Smart and Annie Smart, her youngest sister Audrey Smart and her sister-in -law Helen Devitt. She is survived by her sister Pat Dixon of Summerland B.C., sons Wayne (Patti), Terry (Judy) and Larry (Susan), grandchildren Melissa and Michael (Amanda), Greg (Sandra) and Shelley (Jon Agnew) and Kyle (Jenn), Rebecca and Matthew (Amanda) and great great- grandchildren Lila and Gibson, Maggie and Nolan, Emily and Madelyn, Liam and Grace and Jaiden and Harlie. Mom was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta on March 2, 1921. She met her future husband while he was training for the Signals Corps in Grande Prairie. They married before he was deployed to Australia. While Dad served in the Second World War, Mom packed up her infant son and moved across country to live with her new in-laws in Bowmanville. How brave she must have been to leave everything and everyone she knew to make such a move. Mom worked at Specialty Paper products in Bowmanville for 20 years and was actively involved in a number of organizations such as Eastern Star, B&P Club and the Foresters. She was involved from the start in the formation of the Memorial Park Association as the park was developed and the clubhouse built. Later, she was Secretary- Treasurer of the Bowmanville Recreation Department in its early years and was integral in the formation and running of the Midget-Juvenile Hockey Association as well as the original Junior C hockey club. Mom was inducted into the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 in the category of Honorary member for her contributions to the community for 25 years. She was a long time member of Trinity United Church and was actively involved in church choir when she and dad moved to the Niagara Region to operate a retail business. Even though they lived across the country from each other and saw one another infrequently, Mom and Aunt Pat kept in touch with weekly phone calls. Aunt Pat was near and dear to mom's heart to the very end. Her life was one of love and commitment... for her family, community and church. She served all for many, many years. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place at the Devitt's Cemetery. Donations in Jean's memory can be made to Devitt's Cemetery or charity of choice. DOBBIE, James Charles Cleland December 25, 1936 - April 4, 2022 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ James Charles Cleland Dobbie, "Charlie" turned 85 Christmas Day. On April 4, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer he passed away at Ed's House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre in Cobourg Ontario. He spent his last day with his wife and children by his side. Charlie was born in Cambuslang, Scotland to the Reverend Robert and Mary Dobbie. Charlie is predeceased by his older brother Robert 'Doughty' Owen (wife Margaret) of Crail who he said was someone he looked up to. He lived in Ardrossan, Glasgow and St. Andrews but his formative years were spent in his beloved Crail. It was on the rugby field where he shone and spent most of his time and met Johnny Bett his lifelong friend and brother. In 1955 at the age of 18 he moved to Toronto with his family as his father took a position as professor of Old Testament at Emmanuel College. Charlie finished high school at North Toronto, then attended the University of Toronto where he met his wife Joyce Hopkins in 1958. They were married December 23, 1961 and moved to Tidefall Drive in Agincourt where they raised their four children. He was very active in his church and in the Bridlewood community. After losing his wife Joyce to cancer in 1999 Charlie retired from his job as supervisor at Mayhew and Associates to travel the world. His favourite trip was an African safari. It was on a return flight home after visiting his friend Johnny that he met his second wife Gwen Logan at the Manchester airport. He always said "he hit gold twice". They married 2006. Gwen and Charlie lived in Port Hope and Cobourg but travelled much and wintered in Florida. They spent the last years in Pickering. Charlie said retirement was the best job he ever had. He volunteered for Habitat, Cancer Society and Community Care just to name a few. Charlie was passionate about supporting girls in Third World countries through Plan Canada. His one regret is that he did not get to meet three of the six girls he had been sponsoring. Charlie was dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. At the age of 75 he cycled in the 200 km ride to conquer cancer not once but four times. Charlie lived by the Golden rule "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". His favourite quote was: 'you take the high road I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before you.' Charlie was such a selfless, caring gentleman who made the world a better place and will be missed every day by his wife Gwen and loving children Catherine Foster, Suzanne Fast (Kevin), Geoffery Dobbie, Scott Dobbie (Cheryl), his 11 grandchildren: Brandon (Amanda), Dylan, Alexis, Abigail (Jeremy), Jacob (Laura), Matthew (Rachel), Haley, Evan, Caleb, Ethan, Owen and his 7 great-grandchildren Autumn, Joshua, Jackson, Charlie, Eli, Elizabeth, and Adrian and by his stepchildren Bruce (Joy), Scott (Laura), Colleen, as well as his many loving Hopkins- McKee relatives and friends. Memorial donations can be made to Plan Canada, Canadian Cancer Society or Ed's House Cobourg. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cobourg, May 6 at 11:00, followed by a reception. Family Internment at Oshawa Union cemetery and Crail at a later date. Special thanks to Bruce and Joy who made it possible for him to stay at home with Gwen for so long, Dr. Essak and the amazing staff at Ed's House.
