At the RS McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre, the laboratory and pathology departments play a "significant role, especially for cancer patients," said Dr. Nadia Ismiil, the chief and medical director of laboratory medicine program. "80 per cent of all those patients who come in, the lab has something to do with it. It could be a simple blood test or it could be part of the journey of the patient from the moment that patient goes to their family physician or goes through a cancer program. They are treated, they are monitored, they are followed up. Every step of the way, we are with our patients," Ismiil said.
