Six months after the Oshawa Markets opened its doors, the food court has become a destination for foodies looking for Indian desserts, cabbage rolls, pizza, bubble tea and everything in between. "The food court at Oshawa Markets is so unique because it truly is an international hub of food," says Oshawa Markets owner Erik Tamm. "You get authentic food inspired by cultures around the world ... the authenticity of the food here will take you on a travel around the world, without ever having to leave our food court." TidBits Indian Desserts is one of the newest additions to the food court. It opened April 30 serving classic Indian sweets like boondi laddoo and gulab jamun as well as some hard-to-find items. Owner Libin George says having his own business has always been a dream -- it took 12 years to make it a reality and he still works a full-time job during the week. "Indian desserts are known as 'mithai' in our culture, and no celebration is complete without them, whether it's a birthday party, baby shower, engagement party, wedding, or social gathering," George says. "Durham didn't have many Indian dessert shops. People had to travel all the way to Markham, Scarborough, Brampton or Mississauga to get good ethnic mithais after moving to Durham." Desserts are TidBits are halal and some are also gluten-free and vegan. The most popular menu items are milk cake, green pistachio burfi, dilbahar, kalakand and gulab jamun. "There is a unique flavour to Indian desserts. As vibrant as our culture is, our food also has a unique taste, texture and colour," George says.
