Cafe Portobello celebrated a grand opening on April 16. The café is located inside The Park Coworking, a space where people can work remotely or hold meetings and events. "We've had a really warm welcome from Bowmanville," says Lindsay Cotton, who co-owns the café with Alex Van Camp, Jessi Hoey and Colin Hoey. "Our first week, we had way more orders than we expected, it's been amazing." Cotton and Van Camp are also the owners of downtown Oshawa restaurant Portobello Road, which opened in March 2021 and specializes in grab-and-go meals that are plant- based with no meat, dairy sugar or processed ingredients. Both locations have a goal of serving food that is good for you -- and tastes good. "You will find organic foods that are as minimally processed as possible," Cotton explains. "Every ingredient that we use has been chosen because it has health benefits, right down to the sweetener in the coffee." Cotton says a lot of thought goes into the details -- like grinding their own flour from whole heirloom grains and ensuring produce is local by working with 100km Foods, which sources and distributes products from more than 140 Ontario farms. The Cafe Portobello menu includes sandwiches, appetizers, desserts, drinks and smoothies. There's smoked vegetable dip with seasonal pickles and toast; homemade coconut yogurt topped with fruit, granola, maple syrup and seeds; and sandwiches like the "TLT" (tomato, lettuce and tempeh) on sourdough bread. Pre-made meals from Portobello Road can also be found in a retail fridge at the café. Cotton says a big focus will be on supporting other small businesses through monthly vendor shows and by offering local products such as coffee from Oshawa-based Aves Coffee Company and vegan baked goods from Kind Bakehouse in Courtice. The Park Coworking is located at 182 Wellington St., on the third floor. It's free to hang out at the café, lounge or task tables at The Park Coworking. Fees apply to use a meeting room or office or reserve a desk. We want to hear about your favourite places to eat in Durham!
