Krista MacNeil has been named the new executive director, replacing Carly Kalish, who left the agency recently to become the executive director of Victim Services Toronto. MacNeil has been a clinical director at the organization for the past two years and she has more than 20 years experience in the field. "I am passionate about anti-oppressive practices that empower and support resilience in marginalized communities," MacNeil said. "I value strong community partnerships that enhance support for victims of crime." MacNeil is a Mi'kmaw woman from Nujio'qonik, Ktaqmkuk. She completed her master of social work from Wilfrid Laurier University and is certified in trauma-focused therapy through the Medical University of South Carolina. During her time with VSDR, the agency received the 2022 Attorney General's Victim Services Team Award of Distinction and a 2022 Community Builders Award. VSDR is a team of crisis intervention counsellors, prevention facilitators, advocates, students and volunteers, with the mission to prevent violence through awareness and education, as well as collaborate with community agencies to provide rapid, trauma-informed support and advocacy for every person in Durham who has experienced crime or sudden tragedy. VSDR collaborates with Durham Regional Police Service, and the two organizations work together to support victims and the community. "We welcome Krista to her new role as executive director and look forward to our continued partnership with VSDR," Deputy Chief Joseph Maiorano said. "Officers know that they can call on VSDR to provide support to those in our community when they need it most. We are grateful for their commitment to victims through their crisis response, intervention and prevention services." VSDR also thanked Kalish for her dedication and professionalism as the former executive director for four years. Her leadership made a positive impact on the organization, the agency noted. NEW LEADER AT VICTIM SERVICES OF DURHAM REGION KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durham region.com NEWS Kettlemans Bagel plans to open its highly anticipated Whitby location the week of June 20. This is the seventh location for the Ottawa company, which is known for making traditional Montreal-style bagels. Like other Kettlemans stores, the Whitby location at 4140 Garden St. will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Kettlemans has been around since 1993 with open-concept stores that allow customers to see bagels being hand-rolled, boiled in honey water to give a slight sweetness to the exterior -- and finally, baked in a wood fire oven. The company expanded into the GTA market in 2020 with a location in Etobicoke. Another location opened in March at 33 Bathurst St. In Toronto and more sites are planned. "We're really excited to bring Kettlemans Bagel to the town of Whitby. It is an experience that is shared and if you've ever eaten with us, you know it's like no other," says Keara Johnston, senior marketing manager for Kettlemans. What's on the menu? Bagel flavours include sesame seed, poppy-seed, garlic, cinnamon raisin, pumpernickel, chocolate, blueberry and all dressed. You can also find deli sandwiches, spreads, salads and baked goods. Popular items included the Kettleman's Special -- a bagel with smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato and red onion served with garlic olives -- and the LGBT, a bagel sandwich with lettuce, guacamole, smoked bacon, tomato and mayo. Proceeds from every LGBT sandwich are donated to the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research. We want to hear about your favourite places to eat in Durham!
