Pink construction hats dotted a building site in Oshawa as Habitat for Humanity GTA is in the process of building 50 units. Volunteers, staff, supporters and construction trade workers were at the site at Normandy Street and Dean Avenue for the Women Build Durham 2022. This is the first Women Build Durham in two years, as the 2020 and 2021 versions were cancelled due to the pandemic. "We are thrilled to be back in Durham Region with women rolling up their sleeves, grabbing a hammer and helping to build homes for local families," Habitat GTA CEO Ene Underwood said in a statement. "Many of the essential workers who helped get us through the pandemic are now struggling to find a quality home they can afford, especially in Oshawa." Denise Walker, a fund development manager with Habitat GTA, said there were about 80 people on the site. "The first phase is 18 stacked town homes, and the women and friends that come together, they have fundraised and they have advocated and they are coming out to build new skills and have fun and to build safe and affordable homes for families," Walker said. The group is hoping the homes will be completed by the spring of next year, Walker noted. She added the focus of Women Build is on women who work in the skills trade. Whirlpool provides a refrigerator and stove for each unit, Walker said. Wendy Symonds of Whitby was there with her niece on this day. "It's a fantastic opportunity to give back. This is my fifth Women Build. It's fantastic to get out and work with other people and give back to the community," Symonds said. Wearing a pink construction hat with bejewelled stickers on it, Symonds thinks people should get involved in the initiative. "Absolutely. It's fun. You get to together in great weather. You're with a lot of other people. You learn great skills. You learn a lot. You're giving back while having a lot of fun," she noted. Today, she was doing stair blocking, which means building the stairs to the wall, but leaving space for drywall to be installed. Maya Williams Carnio, 16, of Ajax, said, "I wanted to join my aunt. I know it's an important cause, so I wanted to help out." Maya is hoping to help out at other Habitat projects in the future. A portion of the homes will be provided to the BlackNorth Initiative, a new local non-profit committed to the removal of systemic barriers negatively affecting the lives of Black Canadians. Habitat GTA built a 24-unit site on Centre Street South between Royal Street and Avenue Street in Oshawa. There are 24 families and almost 100 children living there.
