In a May 26 tweet, Durham police advised there would be a "police presence" at the Clarington secondary school the next day following a social media threat "from an unknown source" in order "to ensure the safety of students and staff." On May 27, police stated around noon that they had "determined there (are) no safety concerns at this time" after investigating the threat, adding that the suspect is a "man" from outside of Durham Region. "There were no incidents at the school that day and the actions taken by police were precautionary for the safety of staff and students," said Durham police in a June 21 release announcing the charges. "Police would like to remind the public that threats to schools are taken very seriously." A 15-year-old male from Ottawa has been charged with uttering threats. The May 26 social media threat came nearly a week after police warned of a similar scare on May 20 at a Bowmanville high school. In that incident, Durham police said they had "been made aware of some rumours circulating on social media today regarding threats made involving a Bowmanville High School" and that the matter was being looked into by East Division officers. At that time, police advised the public that "there are no safety concerns at this time." Those two social media threat came in the days surrounding the May 24 shooting rampage in Uvalde, Texas where police there allege an 18-year-old gunman entered a local elementary school and opened fire, killing 19 students and two teachers. The suspect was later killed in a shootout with state border patrol tactical officers. Anyone with information about the Clarington Central Secondary School threat is asked to contact Detective-Constable Hilliard at 905-579-1520, extension 1657.
