Now part of the Chartwell family! Durham's best were prominent when the end-of-season Ontario Hockey League all-star teams were chosen recently. Half of the first all-star team was made up of Durham-born players, as Pickering winger Brennan Othmann of the Flint Firebirds, Ajax winger Brandon Coe of the North Bay Battalion and Bowmanville defenceman Ryan O'Rourke of the Soo Greyhounds were chosen in a vote by the league's 20 general managers. All three OHL veterans had outstanding seasons. Othmann and Coe were among the top seven OHL scorers this season, with Coe notching 101 points. Coe was also selected OHL overage player of the year as well. Othmann wracked up 97 points to pace Flint's attack. Both players were second overall OHL draft choices -- Coe in 2017, Othmann in 2019 -- and both have also been selected in the NHL draft. Othmann went in the 2021 draft, 16th overall to the New York Rangers, and Coe in the fourth round (98th overall) of the 2020 draft to the San Jose Sharks. O'Rourke was a first-round OHL pick in 2018, 20th overall to the Greyhounds, and a second-round selection (39th overall) to Minnesota in the 2020 NHL draft. He had 46 points from the back end for Sault Ste. Marie this past season. The other members of the first all-start team are Windsor centre Wyatt Johnson, the OHL's Red Tilson award winner as MVP, defenceman Nathan Staios, chosen the league's top defenceman, and London Knights goalie Brett Brochu, who was picked top goalie in the league. Another Durham native, Jack Thomp- son of Courtice, made the second all-star team. The defenceman, who was traded by Sudbury to the Soo in mid-season, had 57 points last season. He was a second-round pick (30th overall) in the 2018 OHL draft by Sudbury and a third-round pick (93rd overall) by Tampa Bay in the 2020 NHL draft. Finally, rookie centre Calum Ritchie of the Oshawa Generals was the top choice for the first-team rookie squad. The Oakville native was the second pick overall in the 2021 OHL draft and is eligible for the 2023 NHL draft. Ritchie had 19 goals and 26 assists for 45 points in 65 games this season.
