The shop named mi'korner opened June 1 at 93 Winchester Rd. E. serving dim sum favourites from barbecue pork buns, to pork and shrimp siu mai. "My sister and I grew up in Hong Kong, we love dim sum, we love the street foods," says Mandi Tang, who co-owns mi'korner with her sister Mikko Tang. "We would always travel to Markham and Scarborough to get these things and that's not really convenient." Dim sum is a style of traditional Chinese food that typically includes small plates of steamed dumplings, rolls and other bite-sized snacks. You can find dim sum in Durham Region -- but restaurants offering it are few and far between. "There aren't many places in this neighbourhood offering such fantastic food," Mikko said, explaining the decision to open mi'korner in Brooklin. The dim sum takeout menu at mi'korner includes options like barbecue pork buns, chicken feet, beef and water chestnut balls, and shrimp har gow. Mel Leung recently moved to Whitby with her husband and young children and says she loves the area, but is hoping to see more food diversity -- and dim sum a few minutes from home is a good start. "I was SO excited to see this open in Brooklin," Leung said in an email to durhamregion.com. "I'm Chinese and I am picky about dim sum and this is authentic like you would find in other parts of the GTA. Now I have a go-to place if I have a craving." Commenters on the Durham Region Eats Facebook group were similarly excited -- "dim sum in Brooklin? I never would have thought this day would come!" one fan said. The takeout menu at mi'korner also includes street food from Hong Kong, Japan and Korea -- you can find Korean-style potato and fish cake corn dogs on a stick, shrimp tempura, onigiri, curry fish balls and bubble waffles (gai daan jai), which have a crispy outside and soft, sweet inside. "Asian street food is wonderful and amazing and full of variety," Mikko said, noting that many menu items are personal favourites for her and her sister. Mi'korner also has a retail section selling frozen dim sum, frozen Japanese and Koren food, Asian snacks, drinks and noodles and a selection of keto and low-carb products.
