People can catch a glimpse into the service areas of the historic site, including the family vault, the central clockwork system and the elevator engine room, among others. The basement tour presents an understanding of how a 55-room mansion used to run. It highlights the industrial complex needed to operate the lifestyle of the McLaughlin family. The estate is a designated national historic site and the family home of Col. Robert Samuel McLaughlin, the founder of General Motors of Canada. The site educates and highlights McLaughlin's contribution to Canada. The first Monday in August is a civic holiday in Ontario and is celebrated as McLaughlin Day in Oshawa. When the McLaughlins were in residence the basement was the industrial hub of the mansion, including laundry facilities, the cannery, the boilers, the workings of the elevator, the wine cellar and much more. Visitors can enjoy the one-hour tour of the basement from Saturday, July 30, through to Sunday, Aug. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Book your tickets online for $15 per person at www.parkwoodestate.com The country's finest and last remaining grand estate is at 270 Simcoe St. N. at the corner of Adelaide Street in Oshawa.
