The six-foot-seven, Sinclair Secondary School graduate, who was fifth in the Tokyo Olympics last summer, had his best ever decathlon with 8,701 points, to finish second to gold medallist Kevin Mayer of France who had 8,816 points. LePage. 26, had a number of personal bests over the two-day event coming second overall in a time of 46.84 seconds in the 400 metres, the last event of the first day of competition on Saturday. On Sunday, he was first in the 110-metre hurdles in a personal best time of 13.78 seconds and then went to first overall in the standings by having his best ever throw in the discus. After the pole vault, the eighth of 10 events, LePage still held the overall lead in the decathlon, but slipped to second in the penultimate event, the javelin. The final event of the decathlon, the 1,500 metres, is the most gruelling of the 10. LePage made sure he was in silver medal position and collapsed on the track at the end of competition secure in his second- place finish. Tokyo gold medallist, Canadian Damian Warner, had to drop out after he pulled up with a hamstring injury in the 400 metres. Whitby's Pierce LePage, shown in file photo, earned a silver medal Sunday in the World Championships in the decathlon.
