9 | durhamregion.com | This Week | Thursday, August 25, 2022 | Students will only have to mask up at Ontario Tech when returning to Durham post-secondary schools this fall. Ontario Tech president Steven Murphy said in a tweet Thursday, Aug. 18 the mask mandate would continue at the Oshawa university. "Ontario Tech University will continue its mask mandate until further notice," Murphy tweeted. "Wearing a mask in congregate settings to keep people safer should not be controversial. We are in this together and need to look out for each other. I'd like to thank our campus community for your diligence," Murphy's tweet concluded. The situation is radically different right next door at Durham College, which shares a Simcoe Street North Oshawa campus with Ontario Tech. As of May 30, the college had suspended masking requirements for entry to its Oshawa and Whitby campus buildings and as of late August, there had been no changes made. There are exceptions at the college where masks are required, however. Those who enter the Oshawa campus library, dental clinic and Campus Health and Wellness Centre, as well as shared DC/Ontario Tech University Campus Corners space, are mandated to wear a mask. Trent University and Trent University Durham made the wearing of masks optional as of June 20, the end of its spring term. Dr. Steven Murphy, Ontario Tech University president, said in a Tweet this week that the university will continue its mask mandate until further notice.
