Children from five to 11 years old can now get a booster shot in Durham Region. As of 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, the Durham Region Health Department is offering booster shots for kids. The province announced on Wednesday, Aug. 31 that children between five and 11 would be eligible for boosters. Those receiving a booster must have finished their primary COVID-19 vaccine series 168 days or six months ago, the health department noted. It's recommended that children in this age group with underlying medical conditions who are at greater risk of severe outcomes due to COVID-19 infection receive a booster, the department said. However, all children five to 11 years old are eligible to receive a first booster dose, the department added. The department noted that the interval of 168 days (six months) may be associated with a lower risk of myocarditis with or without pericarditis. "With informed consent, children five to 11-years old may receive a booster dose at a minimum of three months (84 days) after completion of a primary COVID-19 vaccine series," it said in a statement.
