A report from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says Durham police received a 911 call early on the morning of April 20, 2022 about a break-and-enter at a home in Bomanville. The caller reported that one of the suspects was armed with a gun and multiple police officers were dispatched. The SIU says a police officer was notified that two suspect vehicles had left the scene - one headed north on Bowmanville Avenue and the other travelling south. The officer activated emergency lights and started to pursue the southbound vehicle, a Nissan Altima. The SIU says the Nissan drove into a Canadian Tire parking lot at 2000 Green Road in Bowmanville and "within moments, it struck a concrete light standard and came to a stop." Two of the four people in the Nissan ran from the vehicle -- the police officer chased them and with help from another officer took the two suspects into custody. The SIU says "it was apparent that the 18-year-old male's right arm had been injured in the crash. At hospital, he was diagnosed with a fractured right humerus." The SIU report says there are "no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer conducted himself unlawfully throughout his engagement with the Nissan and its occupants" and that there is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates cases involving Ontario law enforcement officials where someone has died, was seriously injured, allegedly sexually assaulted or shot at.
