According to regional officials, residents have reported that salespeople are contacting them and asking for access to their homes to test the water or inspect water services. The region does not endorse or sell water filters or treatment equipment, and regional staff will not visit without sending an official letter to schedule an appointment. If a resident gets a call or in-person visit from a salesperson, they are advised not to give out any personal information. They can call the region at 905-668-7711 to confirm the call or visit, and residents should not feel pressured to sign any contracts at the door or to let anyone into their homes. They should also ask for identification. All regional employees and authorized contractors carry photo ID. Water from the municipal water supply system meets provincial safety standards and the quality of the region's water is confirmed at an accredited laboratory, which is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change -- a requirement of the Ontario Drinking Water Regulations. Information on water quality testing is available from the region by contacting the Works Department at 905-668-7711, and from water quality reports available online at durham.ca/water.
