"It was actually quite shocking," she says of the time a neighbour told her, "You don't belong here." Born in Canada, Grignon was raised by parents who immigrated from Guyana to Canada in the early 1970s and did their best to assimilate her. "You get to a point where you think you made it," she says. "For someone to tell me I still haven't made it, it was very traumatic." At the time, the City of Pickering was in the midst of creating its Anti-Black Racism Task Force.
