In a tweet, Durham police noted, "With an increase in vehicle thefts across the Region and the arrival of colder weather, @DRPS wants to remind residents not to leave running vehicles in your driveway. Did you know it takes criminals 10 seconds to steal your unlocked vehicle when left running?" Pillman added, "Don't give bad guys a chance." Équité Association, an organization with the goal of reducing crime and insurance fraud, released on Monday, Nov. 14 the top 10 vehicle stolen in Ontario. While high-end vehicles, such as the Lexus RX series and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, were on the list, other vehicles popular with thieves include pickup trucks from the three major North American automakers. DON'T LEAVE VEHICLES RUNNING IN DRIVEWAY: DURHAM POLICE Ontario's police watch- dog has discontinued an investigation into a reported injury sustained by a 66-year-old man during an arrest in Oshawa in July. According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the man was arrested July 31 in the Simcoe Street South and Richmond Street area of Oshawa after he called police about a man threatening suicide. "The man in distress was the caller. Officers took the man to hospital for psychiatric examination. There were suspicions the man may have suffered fractured ribs during the arrest," an SIU statement notes. The SIU says, based on preliminary inquiries and a review of medical records, there was no evidence of a fracture. In the absence of a serious injury, the SIU does not have a mandate to investigate, which is why the file has been closed. The SIU investigates incidents of serious injury or death and allegations of sexual assault involving police officers. NEWS SIU CLOSES INVESTIGATION INTO REPORTED INJURY DURING ARREST IN OSHAWA
