Osaka Food Market opened Oct. 22 at 20 Broadleaf Ave. The first couple of weeks in business have been "overwhelmingly positive," says Dan Fujiwara, who co-owns the business with his wife, Maki Fujiwara. "We had no idea what to expect," he says. "We hoped to get a few customers. We had people lined up out the door on the first day." The market stocks Japanese grocery staples including rice, sake, nori, frozen food, natto and tofu, sauces, noodles, juice, soda, cookies, candy and chocolate. There is also a small menu of hot food items and baked goods inspired by the causal comfort food found at corner stores in Tsukamoto, Osaka. The Fujiwaras met while Dan was living in Japan from 2005 to 2007 -- when the couple moved to Durham, they struggled to find Japanese products. "Once every month or two, we were packing coolers and driving into Markham or Toronto to buy what we wanted," Dan says. While Durham has plenty of sushi, he says Japanese food is much more than that. "There's a big part of Japanese food that we think is missing or doesn't have the platform it deserves." The signature items at Osaka Food Market are Fuji-san's Japanese fried chicken, which is based on Maki's father's recipe, and Oishi Mochi Donut Balls, which have proven to be "very, very popular" Dan says. The doughnut balls are made with tapioca starch and glutenous rice flour to produce a doughnut that is very dense compared to something like a Timbit. "There are very few people in Canada doing this," he says. "If you go in expecting a Tim Hortons doughnut, it's not that. These are quite substantive -- they're thick and chewy and delicious." The menu also includes guidon (beef bowl topped with pickled ginger), yakisoba (Japanese noodles with thinly sliced pork, cabbage and Otafuku sauce), Japanese potato croquettes and Supermoon cheesecakes. In the first weekend of the annual Festive RIDE campaign, the OPP's Collingwood and Blue Mountain Detachment stopped a vehicle that was almost involved in a head-on collision. The vehicle was stopped at Highway 26 at Arrowhead Road in The Blue Mountains, the OPP said. The driver was arrested for impaired operation and an open container of alcohol was found, police added. Gordon Horrocks, 58, has been charged with operation while impaired -- alcohol, operation while impaired -- 80 plus, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The charges have not been proven in court. His licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.
