Across the region, a network of volunteer organizations rescue thousands of cats every year -- they get them medical care, have them spayed or neutered and find them safe homes. The cats they rescue might be abandoned, orphaned, stray or feral. Many are sick or injured and are suffering. The problem has been there for decades, but rescuers across Durham say things have become dramatically worse since the pandemic. "We're running ourselves ragged and we're not getting ahead. It feels like running on a treadmill; we're running as fast as we can but we're not fixing the problem. It has to be fixed on a higher level," says Kelli Geer, founder of Barn Cat Co-op, a private cat rescue in Durham that works to find safe barns for feral cats and safe homes for domestic cats.
