An organization that collects and distributes new and used footwear to those in need year round, keeping over 50 000 tonnes of products from going to landfill. BioPed collects brand new shoes and places them directly on the feet of individuals in need, both locally and abroad. Children cannot attend school without shoes, and in many countries a lack of appropriate footwear is a common problem. Providing footwear allows children to become educated and helps to pull families out of poverty. Locally, footwear is provided to shelter's and organizations, such as the Ukranian relief, to help keep people on their feet. Your donated shoes are used to create micro enterprises that educate women on creating self-sufficient operations as a way out of poverty. This allows women in places such as Haiti and Honduras to purchase low cost products to be re-sold at local markets. By donating gently used footwear you are making an impact too! You are helping to improve the overall health and safety of individuals down on their luck as well as helping many families buy meals, shelter and send their children to school. BioPed Durham Clinics collect shoes in clinic year round and often have special shoe drives with community partners throughout the year. Anyone who would like to contribute can drop shoes off or contact us at BioPed Oshawa, 238 Ritson Rd N (905) 432-0061 or the BioPed Bowmanville location, 219 King St E (905) 623-0777. Thank you for helping us make a difference! Don't Throw Away Your Used Shoes! Donate Them to BioPed Oshawa There have been many changes in Oshawa over the last 50 years, but at Andy's Hair & Co., one thing has stayed the same -- their commitment to service. Joe Gattellaro has been with the business since 1997, when he partnered with his brother-in law, the original Andy of the name, to open the salon at the former Five Points Mall at Taunton and Ritson. He eventually brought his brother-in-law out in 2016, which is when current partner Joell Clarke joined the operation. "We're a family shop: we serve everyone from little kids to seniors, and we always try to give people what they want. We want to make our customers happy," Gattellaro said of why he thinks the salon has endured as long as it has, despite challenges including moving to a new location at Rossland Square and a pandemic. "When we were informed the mall was closing, we had to find a new location and start from square one," he continued. "We kept the name because Andy's was so well known, but the new location was all Joell and me. We liked this spot because it keeps it local to our old location and we loved the space, there was so much potential in the space." Indeed, the pair completely redid the interior of the salon after relocating, a move that has earned several accolades including Salon Design and Ambience and Salon of the Year (Durham) from the Toronto Hair and Beauty Awards and Ontario Hair and Beauty Awards, as well as a Durhamregion.com Reader's Choice award. "We really want to say thank you to our loyal clients," said Clarke. "We have clients that have been coming to us forever, through all of it -- through COVID, through all three closures. COVID was huge for us; we were shut down for pretty much a year, and we're still here." Clarke said their loyal clients have been key to the salon's ongoing success, while the newly renovated interior and talented staff stylists have helped to attract a wealth of new clients in recent years. "We have clients who used to come here with their kids, and now their kids still come but they bring their own children," she said. "When you find a stylist you like, you travel for them. We're really grateful for our long-term clients and our new clients and of course our staff -- we couldn't do this without them." 'A FAMILY SHOP': ANDY'S HAIR & CO.
