33 | durhamregion.com | This Week | Thursday, November 3, 2022 | The Regional Municipality of Durham has partnered with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), Metrolinx, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), and 18 other regional, county and single-tier municipalities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) area to conduct the eighth Transportation Tomorrow Survey (TTS). The largest travel survey in Canada, the TTS is a voluntary survey that captures information about trips made by residents during a typical weekday. Invitation letters from the MTO will be sent out to randomly selected households this fall, and residents will be able to complete the survey online (TTS2022.ca) or by phone (1-877-216-7786). There are numerous benefits associated with the TTS, including assisting the region with long-range transportation planning and improvements to its extensive transportation network. Along with planning for road improvements, the TTS data also helps pinpoint where to invest and build infrastructure for public transit, cyclists and pedestrian users. The type of data collected, as part of the TTS, keeps pace with demographic and geographic changes in the Region of Durham as the population grows. Households that complete the survey directly contribute to the effectiveness of the region's strategic plans, including the region's Official Plan, Transportation Master Plan, and the Regional Cycling Plan, to name a few. Key findings from the most recent TTS in 2016 showed the number of work-related trips leaving the region was far greater than those entering the area during the morning commute. However, results showed 80 per cent of jobs located in Durham are held by those who live here. With this data, the region can focus its transportation improvements on supporting local travel, which includes helping students and commuters switch to sustainable modes of travel such as walking or taking public transit. The survey data is also used to provide regular reports to regional council and the public to highlight emerging trends in travel patterns across Durham and the GGH. Data supports investments in the region's transportation network and Durham residents can be assured that tax dollars invested are directed to neighbourhoods where more frequent public transit service and/or road infrastructure improvements are most needed. Through its participation in the TTS, the region is an active planning partner with the MTO and other participating municipalities to help ensure that Durham's residents are helping shape their community's transportation future.
