Officers responding to a report of an incident in the area of Centre Street North and Beech Street West around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, found a woman with a stab wound to her calf, Durham police said. The woman was taken to hospital. A suspect was later arrested. A 42-year-old Osha- wa man is charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and assault. The charges have not been proven in court. Police said the assault was an isolated incident, and that the name of the accused was withheld to protect the victim's identity. SUSPECT CHARGED WITH ASSAULT AFTER WOMAN STABBED The Town of Whitby is asking residents for more feedback on the issue of fireworks. According to the Town, more than 650 people completed a survey on fireworks earlier this year, but residents had "mixed" feelings about fireworks with a 50-50 split on whether people enjoyed them. Currently, fireworks are only allowed in Whitby on New Year's Eve and Day, Victoria Day, Canada Day and Diwali from dusk until 11 p.m. The current survey asks residents whether they're in favour of consumer-grade fireworks that residents can purchase and set off on their own or whether they prefer a fireworks ban which would mean only licensed pyrotechnic companies with a permit could set them off. The results of the survey will drive whether the Town changes its current fireworks bylaw. Whitby council most recently considered its fireworks bylaw in 2021 when councillors opted to add Diwali to the list of holidays exempted from the town's general ban on fireworks. Council made the decision after considering policies against racism, discrimination, exclusion and intolerance, and it was a unanimous decision by council.
