2 Friday, July 28, 2023 brooklintowncrier.com Ethan Majid appears to be one of those who knows, roughly anyway, what he wants. Where that takes him in the long run remains to be seen. But such is how the creative mind works. It begins with ideas and, as he puts it, things just seem to happen. Majid was one of nearly 350 Brooklin High School grads to walk across the stage last month and move on to the next stage in life. The school's seventh and largest grad ceremony was held at the Iroquois Park Centre, in the pad 1 rink (minus ice) that is now thankfully air conditioned. Previous events had been a hot house. Majid won the annual Brooklin Town Crier award we donate each year for a student going into a post-secondary program in English, Media Studies, or Communications Technology. It includes a $400 gift. He's an interesting fellow and a walk through his self-designed web site attests to his creativity. You should visit it at: goo.by/ ecgbc or https://sites.google. com/view/ethanmajidphotography/home "I need to express myself," he says. "It's who I am." The web site was a final grade 12 assignment and, while it is indeed a portfolio of his photography, it's much more than that. Through seven sub-heads he calls tales, Majid uses his camera lens to explore vast swaths of how he views the world, from jellyfish to as, he calls it, painting narratives. "I just love the feeling of being able to create," he continues. "If I'm feeling a certain way, it comes out in my photos." His passion for the visual arts will take him to York University's cinema and media arts program in September where he hopes to also explore 3D animation and perhaps cinema tog raphy. He also plans to study the DaVinci Resolve video editing software at York. From there, ideally, a life in the film industry is a target, although he's not dissuaded by those who tell him it's highly competitive and tough to break into. A former Blair Ridge Public School student, Majid began by taking a high school photography course, using his phone as the camera. His web site is a testament to just how far he's come. His biggest challenge now is finding accommodations near the university as options are limited. So far, the best he's found is a shared space that would cost him $1600 per month, well beyond any student's budget. The BTC wishes our newest award winner the best the future has to offer.
