The Optimist Club of Brooklin awarded its annual scholarships to Paige Thompson and Nicole Pouma. Each received a $1,000 scholarship to put towards their post secondary studies. The scholarships recognize exceptional youth who have demonstrated their contributions to the service of our community through school and community organizations. Thompson is at the University of New Brunswick this fall. "As a student who was born and raised in Brooklin, I am so honoured to have won the Optimist Club of Brooklin Scholarship Contest," she said. "I feel immense gratitude towards all those who have helped me throughout my academic career, as well as the Optimist Club of Brooklin for continuing to support my commitment to learning." Pouma meanwhile is attending the University of Guelph's Applied Human Nutrition, Bachelor of Applied Science Program. "It is truly an honour to be a recipient of this scholarship by the Brooklin Optimists," she said. "Winning this reminds me that others, outside my friends, family, and loved ones, support my dream of becoming a registered dietitian. I hope to contribute back to my community and inspire others to pursue their goals and aspirations." Supporting education Optimist Scholarship Chair, Tanja Coughlan, says, "Our motto is bringing out the best in kids and we know the financial burden that post secondary education can place on families, so offering these annual scholarships is something we're committed to doing." Driven by ideas from its volunteer members, the Optimist Club of Brooklin offers a number of events throughout the year, some paid and some free, but all focused on making Brooklin an amazing place to live. The profits from paid events go towards funding scholarship and other community initiatives. It also offers two other scholarship programs; a public speaking contest and an essay contest.
