Friday, December 8, 2023 5 Brooklin Town Crier Church fire Agar taught Sunday School at the United Church. On June 15, 1943, Matt borrowed a pair of spurs from Mr. Allems, Brooklin's harness maker, to climb inside the church steeple to put out a fire caused by lightning. Despite his dedication to beekeeping, there were periods when he could not support his family so he supplemented his income by working at the Eaton's warehouse, and doing various odd jobs in the Village. He even served as a guard at the Whitby jailhouse which was then located at Victoria and Byron Streets. As for the historic "Honey House", which still stands today, it was sold in 1998 and converted into a residence. Inez Curl, who lives there now, recalls Matt's kindness. Once, after finishing a night shift at the jail, he brought a discharged inmate home for breakfast, generously sending him off with a pail of honey. Matthew Arnold Agar was born in 1917 in Kearns Township, part of Timiskaming District, and moved with his family to Brookin in 1920. He married Ruth Fairchild Jull in 1943, raising six children together before she passed away in 1995. Matt sadly died from an accident in the "Honey House" on June 19, 1998. The couple are resting at Groveside Cemetery. continued from page 4 The province has passed Bill 131, which enables the GO Transit Station Funding Act, 2023. This is a significant milestone in the journey to expand rapid transit across Durham Region and beyond. The Act introduces an innovative revenue tool that will enable municipalities to support the building of new stations along GO train routes. Rapid transit stations that spur transit-oriented communities help meet the needs of our growing communities, bringing new development, particularly housing opportunities. This legislation will allow Durham to consider assuming upfront station costs--with costs recovered through a Station Contribution Fee-- guaranteeing new stations without taxpayers paying the cost. The plan to build four new GO stations for the Lakeshore East GO Extension will provide frequent, reliable and accessible transit; it will open opportunities to new and existing residents and visitors to explore all that Durham has to offer. Durham Region continues to champion the GO Lakeshore East Extension and is thrilled to see rapid transit solutions that support transit-oriented communities moving forward.
