Talking Trash Regional Councillor Rhonda Mulcahy The war on waste is in full swing both provincially and here at home. Here are the highlights of what is coming in May and June. A future Brooklin Town Crier column will outline the Blue Box Transition with Circular Materials and the enhanced Green Bin changes coming in July. I will also explain the Regional pilot launching of large rolling garbage bins. Dump Fees (as of May 1, 2024) • The minimum user fee for general residential and commercial garbage waste increases from $5 per load to $7 per load for loads up to 40 kilograms (88 pounds). • For every eight kilograms greater than 40 kilograms, the fee increases from $1 to $1.40. The flat rate for loads of 1,000 kg (metric tonne) or more increase from $125 to $175 per 1,000 kg. • Fees for fill materials and mixed loads containing fill materials increase from $250 to $375 per 1,000 kilograms. Fee increases are due to cost increases from contracted services. NOTE: Only loads containing chargeable materials will be subject to the fee increases. Loads that only contain the following items are free: • bulky white polystyrene • electronic waste • household hazardous waste (a max. of 50 litres) • plastic signs • tires (maxi. of 10 tires) For more information visit durham.ca/wmf. Region Curbside Giveaway Day Building on the success of last year's event, the Curbside Giveaway Day is back Saturday, May 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can place unwanted items in good condition, clearly marked as "Free", on their curb for anyone to pick up. At the end of the Giveaway Day, residents return unclaimed items to their home. How to participate: • Check out the full list of acceptable and unacceptable items. • Mark all your items "Free" and place them at the curb on Giveaway Day. • Please return unclaimed items into your home by 7 p.m., or: • Donate to charity. • Give to a local thrift shop. • Post them on a free classifieds website, such as Kijiji, Varage or Facebook Marketplace. • Material left at the curb after the Curbside Giveaway Day will be subject to by-law enforcement. Reminders: • Baby items such as car seats and cribs should not be placed at the curb for safety reasons. • Remember to obey all traffic laws and to watch for children.
