The Governor General having issued his proclamation for the due observance of the National Holiday, due preparations for its proper celebration have been made in the town of Whitby. In the first place, the 34th Battalion of Volunteers, numbering ten companies, has been called together for the purpose of being presented with a magnificent pair of Regimental Colors in the name of the ladies of the County. The parade will be formed at 11 a.m. The corporation of the town, with their usual liberality, have made provision for a dinner for the officers and men of the battalion. The new instruments for the Band will also be presented in the name of the County Council, who voted the liberal sum of $300 in aid of their purchase. After the presentation and consecration of the colors, the troops will be reviewed and marched past. Athletic sports will take place on the Fair grounds – and the Whitby Lacrosse Club have arranged for a great game in the afternoon.
In the evening it is proposed to have a monster promenade concert in the Drill Shed, at which it is hoped the band of the 13th Hussars from Toronto, will be present to discourse sweet strains. An immense crowd from the surrounding country is expected, and no pains will be spared to make the day a pleasant one for all.
