In the account of the presentation of the new colors to the 34th Battalion at the fair last week (Sept. 19) by Warden Gould for the County of Ontario, the Chronicle stated that Lieut. G. Glover was one of the two officers who received them from the hand of the chief magistrate of “The Keystone County of the Keystone province of the Dominion of Canada,” as Major Farewell in his remarkably able address expressed it. That was a mistake. Mr. Glover is a sergeant, the one who with hospital sergeant Thompson constituted the color party. Lieut Ray is the gentleman who acted with Lieut. King as senior and junior Lieutenants of the battalion in the beautiful and impressive ceremony. Since it is a memorable incident in the history of the volunteer militia of the county, the names of all those officers of the 34th who participated and their rank on the occasion are hereby recorded. Commanding Officer, Major Farewell; Senior Major, Capt. Adjutant Rutledge; Junior Major, Capt. Henderson; Surgeon, Major Rae; Quarter Master, Capt. Dillon; Captains Grierson and Smith; Lieuts. Annes, King and Rae; Non – Commissioned officers Sergeant Major Lawrence, Hospital Sergeant Thompson and Sargent Glover. Lt.-Col.
The New Colors of the 34th
O’Donovan was also present. An incident that missed mentioning was the handing of the battered remnant of one of the old colors (the
Queen’s color apparently) to the Warden by Major Farewell when he accepted the new and splendid banners from the county.
