Immediate establishment of a major airport between Oshawa and Whitby was demanded by Harry Newman, National Government candidate, in his address to the election meeting held by the Riding Association at Oshawa Collegiate Saturday afternoon (March 2). Establishment of such an airport, he declared, was necessary to bring the airplane industry to the Oshawa district which was entitled to such development because of the high caliber of mechanics which are available in the area.
He declared that the liberal government had promised a survey of the proposed airport site but had done nothing about it, making the promise merely as an election bribe. He declared that if an airport is established the creation of aeroplane plants would absorb the employment slack which is ever with Oshawa automobile mechanics now.
