Aug. 6, 2024: After five years of hard work by so many people, we are celebrating the announcement by the Province that a hospital is coming to Whitby! I want to start with a heartfelt thank you to everyone who played a part in this success story. Thank you to Town of Whitby staff, members of Whitby Council, Lakeridge Health, and Whitby's Hospital Task Force. Thank you to Durham's MPPs, Premier Doug Ford and Minster of Health Sylvia Jones. And a huge thank you to our community, for making your voices heard. We know that healthcare is so important to our residents. Time and time again when we ask for feedback or engagement from the community, healthcare is one of the top priorities - specifically, the need for a hospital. We heard it during the engagement on Whitby's Community Strategic Plan. Securing land for a new hospital was one of the top action items identified. We heard it this spring in the feedback from Whitbys' 2024 Community Survey. When residents were asked to name the single most important issue facing our town, the need for a hospital was one of the top three answers. I hear it when I sit down for coffee with residents, when I pop into businesses, when I'm at events. Our residents understand that immense growth is coming to Whitby and to Durham. Today's celebration has been five years in the making. The journey to secure a new hospital for Whitby started in 2019 and has involved tireless work from so many people at every stage of the process. In January 2022, Lakeridge Health announced it had selected the site in Whitby as the location for its new hospital in Durham Region. This site was chosen to ensure residents across this rapidly growing region are provided with the right care, in the right place, for decades to come. Most recently, our residents took centre stage when the Town of Whitby launched a community advocacy campaign in February of this year. Thousands of people signed our call-to-action letter and shared deeply moving personal stories about what a new hospital means to them. We papered Town of Whitby facilities in orange hearts, with each one representing a person who supported the campaign. This incredible response by our residents helped put Durham's urgent need for a hospital in the spotlight and underscore how much healthcare matters to people of all ages, backgrounds, and demographics. Thank you to everyone who participated - your voices were heard. Never doubt that you have the power to make a difference in your community. Mayor Roy Celebrates Hospital Announcement
