Joe Nieuwendyk, now with the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League, is one of the top 10 candidates for U.S. hockey’s Holey Baker award for outstanding player.

Nieuwendyk led the eastern conference in scoring over the past season in College hockey his final year with the Cornell University squad.

He played in 23 of the team’s 27 games and scored 26 goals and added 28 assists. Cornell won 11 games and lost 16.

He missed four of the team games when he played for Canada in the Calgary Cup.

Nieuwendyk, a 6 ft., 2 in. 200 lb. centre with Cornell, was the top goal scorer in the Eastern Conference last year, ahead of Harvard’s Scott Fusco, the 1986 Holey Baker Award winner.
