Whitby’s Joe Nieuwendyk scored a hat trick two weekends ago to lead his Cornell University varsity hockey team to a 7 – 3 victory over Dartmouth.
After just ten minutes of play the Cornell team was down three goals to the visiting Dartmouth crew but later rallied behind Nieuwendyk’s strong performance to pull out the victory.
Nieuwendyk continues to be the team’s third best scorer and has now chalked up 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points, five points behind the leading scorer Duane Moeser of Waterloo, Ontario.
The following day Cornell faced off with Team Canada and managed to keep pace with the team going into the third period tied 2 -2 when the Canadians scored four unanswered goals to win the game 6 – 2.
