Whitby’s Lori Strong recently captured the overall championship in two large gymnastics meets to earn the number one ranking in Canada.
Strong took part in the Elite Canada competition held at Seneca College in Toronto over the past weekend. The 14-year-old Anderson CVI student won the gold overall and the gold in bars, floor and vault.
This competition is one of three that qualifies gymnasts for the 1987 world championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands. As a result of that effort, she became ranked number one in Canada.
“I was fairly nervous going into the competition but once I started, I felt better,” said Strong.
She is hoping to qualify for the ’87 World and would like to be a member of the Canadian gymnastic team for the 1988 Olympics.
Strong previously participated in the Pacific Alliance competition in Macau, China and in Hong Kong where she earned six golds overall in both meets, capturing first place overall. “We stayed in Hong Kong four days after the competition and shopped around,” said Strong. “It was really hot there but I enjoyed it.”
Strong is feeling healthly and is returning to the Oshawa Gemini Gymnastic Club to prepare herself for her next meet.
