Lori Strong retained her title as the top women’s gymnast in Canada with first – place performances overall at the 1989 Elite Canada gymnastics competition held in Dec. 15 and 16 in Mississauga.
Strong was first overall after compulsories, with first –place finishes on vault, bars and floor exercises, and fifth on the beam. She also won optionals with firsts on vault and bars, fifth on floor and sixth on beam.
The meet was to determine the top 12 athletes who will represent Canada on the Canadian Women’s gymnastic team for the 1990 international competitive season.
Also the event determined the four – member women’s team to represent Canada at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, Jan. 24 to Feb. 3, 1990. Strong and Pickering’s Larissa Lowing, formerly of Whitby, will be on the team.
Lowing, second overall at the Elite competition, and Strong, are members of the Winstonettes Gymnastic Association.
Strong was 22nd overall in individual competition at the recent world championships.
