Whitby gymnast Lori Strong was selected athlete of the month for April by the Sports Federation of Canada on Monday (May 11) for outstanding performances at two European meets.
Strong, 14, a Gr. 9 student at Anderson Collegiate, received the award, a plaque, and a return ticket to anywhere in the world at a ceremony in Toronto on Monday.
During April at a meet in Hungary, Strong placed first overall, with a first on the floor routine, a second on the beam and a third on the vault.
Then at a meet in Germany, she again placed first overall, with a first place on the vault and a first on the bars. She also placed first in the mixed pairs with Mike Inglis, a Toronto gymnast.
“It felt really good” said Strong of the award.
“It is the first time that anyone from the Canadian Gymnastic Federation has won an award like that.”
Strong left Wednesday morning (May 13) for her next meet, the Canadian Nationals in Winnipeg. The finals will be televised on Sunday, (May 17).
