- Miss R. Gertrude Bryan was born at Whitby in 1872. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bryan. She trained as a nurse at the Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio from 1894 to 1896 under Miss Mary Hamer Greenwood, another Whitby native. She obtained post-graduate training in nursing at Johns Hopkins Hospital, New York. When the Ontario Hospital opened at Whitby in 1916, she joined the nursing staff. She became director of the Nursing School from 1920 to 1932 when she went to the Ontario Hospital at Cobourg. She retired to Whitby, where she died in 1961 at the age of 89. She is buried in Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
