- John Dryden was born on June 5, 1840 on Maple Shade Farm (a successful 200-acre property near the village of Winchester (Brooklin) at the north east corner of Thickson Road and the 7th Concession, Whitby Township, Upper Canada. He was the son of James Dryden and Elizabeth Marsh. He married Mary Lydia Holman, the daughter of a New York publisher in 1867 and they had three sons and five daughters.
John Dryden served as Deputy Reeve of Whitby Township from 1865 to 1868 and as Reeve in 1869-1870. In 1879 he was elected Liberal Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Ontario South and served as Ontario's Minister of Agriculture from 1890 to 1905. As well, he was prominent in business as president of the Port Whitby and Port Perry Railway and a director of the Ontario Bank. Still, he loved faming and later took over management of Maple Shade Farm.
After his mothers death he became a prominent member of the Baptist Church. He died at Toronto on July 29, 1909 and is buried at Dryden Baptist Cemetery, Columbus, Ontario. - Date of Original
