- James Rowe was born on October 20, 1799 near Montreath, Queen's County, Ireland. He came to Canada in 1824 and built piers and warehouses at Port Whitby in 1843 -1844. In 1849 he formed James Rowe & Co., a grain shipping business at Port Whitby. He was Reeve of Whitby Township in 1852-1853 and Warden of Ontario County in 1853. He was Mayor of the Town of Whitby in 1855, September to December 1857, and in 1861. He was Reeve in 1856, 1859, 1860, 1865, 1866 and 1868. He was Deputy Reeve in 1863-1864. He was a member of the Town Council for 13 years. James Rowe died at Whitby on January 28, 1869. He is buried at St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Port Whitby.
This painting was presented tot he Town of Whitby in its Centennial year (1955) by Bill Lawler, a great-grandson of James Rowe. - Date of Original
