- John Shier was born at Peter-Cutler, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, on August 16, 1808. He studied under his father to be a Provincial Land Surveyor and Civil Engineer in Scotland, and emigrated to the United States in 1829, settling at Newburg, New York. Here he constructed sloops on the Hudson River for five years. He also toured the states of Indiana, Illinois and Ohio and settled at Cleveland, Ohio in 1835 where he served as city engineer. In 1845 he came to Oshawa, and to Whitby in 1850. He was Ontario County Engineer from 1854 to 1867 and Ontario County Clerk from 1877 to 1882. As an architect, he designed Inverlynn, the residence of William Laing, and Dinsbaugh, the residence of John Ham Perry, in Whitby. He served as Chairman of the Whitby Board of School Trustees and secretary-treasurer of the Ontario Agricultural Society. When it was split into the North and South Ontario County Agricultural Societies, he served as president of the South Ontario Agricultural Society. John Shier drew the plans in 1856 for a proposed railway from Whitby to Georgian Bay. He died at Whitby on May 14, 1882, and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
