Description
A black and white portrait photograph of Reverend John Abraham (1843-1926).
Notes
Reverend John Abraham was born in Haldimand County, Canada West, on February 21, 1843. He attended Port Dover High School, the University of Toronto and Knox College, Toronto where he received a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1904. He married on May 26, 1875 at Vienna, Ontario to Sarah Edison. He entered the ministry in 1872 at Watford, Ontario and came to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Whitby in 1879. He retired from St. Andrew's in 1914, after serving 35 years at Whitby, a record for service by any minister in the town. He was Moderator of the Synod of Toronto and Kingston in 1890. His son was Reverend Herbert Edison Abraham, pastor of Eglinton and Bedfork Park Presbyterian Church, Toronto. Reverend John Abraham moved to Toronto after his retirement in 1914 and died at Toronto on November 20, 1926. He is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.
This photograph was used in a religious pamphlet issued by St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on his retirement.
