Description
A black and white portrait photograph of Reverend William Ormiston (1821-1899). Reverend Ormiston is pictured seated on a chair.
Notes
Reverend William Ormiston was born at Symington, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on April 23, 1821 and came to Canada with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ormiston, in 1834. William taught school in Darlington Township in the 1840's and lived in Whitby Township. On October 10, 1848 he married Clarissa, daughter of Whitby pioneer Samuel Cochrane. He graduated from Victoria College in Cobourg and later studied theology. From 1856 to 1870 he was minister of the United Presbyterian Church in Hamilton. He was moderator of the United Presbyterian Synod in 1859 and was moderator of the church in 1869 after it amalgamated with the Free Church. In 1870 he moved to New York City where he became minister of the Collegiate Dutch Reformed Church. He delivered lectures at the seminary in New Brunswick New Jersey, and was a trustee of Rutgers College. In 1888 he retired and moved to California because of ill health. Reverend Dr. Ormiston kept land in Whitby on which a public school was named in his honor in 1992. He died at Azusa, California, where he had a ranch, on March 19, 1899. Reverend William Ormiston is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, New York City, U.S.A.
