- Joel Bigelow was born in Tecumseh Township, near Newmarket, Upper Canada, November 9, 1828 and came to Whitby in the 1850s. He was a twin brother of Joseph Bigelow, one of the founders of Port Perry. On April 18, 1856, he married Mary Ann Dryden, daughter of James Dryden, at Whitby Township. Joel Bigelow operated one of the largest dry goods stores in Whitby on Brock Street in the 1850s and in 1859-1860 built a store on Dundas Street West. He was appointed secretary of the Port Whitby, Lake Scugog, Simcoe and Huron Road Company in 1857 and served on the Whitby
Town Council in 1859. He moved to Milwaukee in 1864, likely because of a depression in the grain market. Later he moved to Wisconsin. In 1866 he moved to Chicago where he remained the rest of his life. He was very active in business affairs of Chicago and amassed a fortune in real estate. He died at Chicago on February 11, 1896. - Date of Original
