- A black and white portrait photograph of William McCabe (1835-1903).
- Notes
- William McCabe was born at Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario on June 12, 1835. From 1858 to 1863 he was principal of the Whitby Grammar School and was President of the Provincial Teachers' Association. He studied law and mathematics at the University of Toronto and left Whitby for Toronto in 1863 to enter the life insurance business. After a brief stay in New York, Mr. McCabe became the first general manager of the Confederation Life Association in Toronto in 1870. In 1881 he was appointed managing director of the North American Life Assurance Company and built it into one of the leading life insurance companies in Canada by the 1890s. He was also consulting actuary for the Commercial Travelers' Association of Canada and district Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada. He died at Toronto on April 23, 1903 and is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.
